Synopsis

Award-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (DEVIL'S BACKBONE, HELLBOY, BLADE II) delivers a unique, richly imagined epic with PAN'S LABYRINTH, a gothic fairy tale set against the postwar repression of Franco's Spain. PAN'S LABYRINTH unfolds through the eyes of Ofelia, a dreamy little girl who is uprooted to a rural military outpost commanded by her new stepfather. Powerless and lonely in a place of unfathomable cruelty, Ofelia lives out her own dark fable as she confronts monsters both otherworldly and human. As Ofelia, the gifted young Spanish actress Ivana Baquero holds the screen with a remarkable combination of innocence and maturity, vulnerability and strength. Baquero is joined by a superb cast that includes international stars Sergí Lopez (DIRTY PRETTY THINGS), Maribel Verdú (Y TU MAMÁ TAMBIÉN) and Ariadna Gil (BELLE ÉPOQUE), as well as frequent del Toro collaborator Doug Jones (HELLBOY). PAN'S LABYRINTH is nominated for SIX Oscars, including Best Foreign Film, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Screenplay.

Reviews

"This is like no movie you've seen before, a haunting mixture of horror, history and fantasy that works simultaneously on every level."

   - Liam Lacey, The Globe and Mail (Toronto)

"Pan's Labyrinth Like his terrific 2001"

   - Ella Taylor, LA Weekly

"A brilliant work of the imagination capable of truly seizing and igniting our fantasies."

   - Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune

"The result of the intricate interplay is a fairy tale for adults that is violent, sometimes shocking, yet utterly engrossing. And eerily instructive; it deepens our emotional understanding of fascism, and of rigid ideology's dire consequences."

   - Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal

"A swift and accessible entertainment, blunt in its power and exquisite in its effects."

   - A.O. Scott, The New York Times
