Synopsis

In writer/director Pedro Almodóvar's new comedy, three generations of women survive wind, fire and even death, thanks to goodness, audacity and a limitless vitality. Abuela may have died in a house fire, but that doesn't stop her from returning home to fix the problems she couldn't resolve while she was alive. When the initial shock has worn off, her ghost becomes a comfort to her daughters Raimunda (Penélope Cruz) and Sole, as well as her grandchild Paula. The living and the dead coexist with little discord, causing situations that are both hilarious and filled with deep, genuine emotion. Penelope Cruz earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for this film.

Reviews

"The great Spanish director's fourth triumph in a row--following"

   - David Ansen, Newsweek

"Volver is Almodovar's passionate tribute to the community of women -- living and dead -- who nurtured him. Through the transformative power of his art -- carried on the wings of Alberto Iglesias' exhilarating score -- we feel their presence. You do not want to miss this one."

   - Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

"With this, possibly his most subdued film, Almodovar reinforces his status as one of the most distinctive and talented filmmakers working today."

   - Claudia Puig, USA Today

"Crammed with outrageous turns of fortune and quicksilver shifts in tone, Almodovar's film is held together by performances so subtle and complex it's hard to single out only one as exceptional. But Cruz is astonishing."

   - Maitland McDonagh, TV Guide

"Raimunda believes that dirty linen should be washed at home: Thank goodness Almodovar hangs some of it up on the screen to dry."

   - Marjorie Baumgarten, Austin Chronicle
