Synopsis

The talk of the Cannes Film Festival, the newest thriller from director/co-writer Bong Joon-ho (Memories of Murder) utilizes state-of-the-art special effects to tell a tale that’s equal parts creature-feature thrill ride, comedy and poignant human drama. The idyllic landscape of the Han River suddenly turns to bedlam as a terrifying creature climbs out of the water and grabs Hyun-seo (Ko A-sung) from her father Gang-du (Song Kang-ho). The government announces that the creature is the host of an unidentified virus. Despite fearing the worst, Gang-du makes plans to infiltrate the forbidden zone to rescue his daughter from the clutches of the beast.

Reviews

"The mix of dark humor, creeping suspense, and a sort of apocalyptic tenderness makes this the best horror flick in years."

   - J.R. Jones, Chicago Reader

"A great piece of filmmaking and a legitimate science-fiction/horror classic."

   - Peter Hartlaub, San Francisco Chronicle

"Joon-Ho's epic is a masterpiece of monster cinema that's intelligent, innovative, and reaches down to the basic core of family unity to propel its story beyond mere conventions of science fiction."

   - Felix Vasquez, Jr., Film Threat

"The Host isn't just a terrific monster movie. This South Korean box-office smash is also a laugh-out-loud comedy and a surprisingly angry political satire."

   - M. E. Russell, Portland Oregonian

"The sudden turns of temperament are a treat after the smart-ass attitude of American horror flicks, and the film is full of minor surprises, squirming in unexpected directions without leaving the conventions behind."

   - Sean Axmaker, Seattle Post-Intelligencer
