Synopsis

Peggy and Pencil are inseparable companions. They sleep together, eat together, and even take-in Friday night movies together. Life is uncomplicated and safe, and although Pencil is a Beagle, Peggy is happily entrenched in a satisfying relationship of co-dependency with her beloved pet. But with love comes loss, and Peggy’s world comes crashing down when Pencil meets a mysterious demise in the neighbor’s yard. Left to pick-up the pieces of her shattered life, Peggy embarks on a personal journey to fill the void. Friends, family and co-workers try to distract Peggy from her misery with their own obsessive quests for happiness, but in the end, she emerges from her loss with a new found sense of her place in the world and what it takes to make her happy. Co-starring Peter Sarsgaard, John C. Reilly and Laura Dern. YEAR OF THE DOG marks the directorial debut for Mike White, writer of THE SCHOOL OF ROCK and THE GOOD GIRL.

Reviews

"I mean no impertinence when I say that as a portrait of love and grief, writer-director Mike White's exceptional film Year of the Dog deserves the same admiration accorded Joan Didion's exceptional memoir"

   - Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

"White's gently perceptive film is a funny, poignant, emotionally honest minor-key character study."

   - Nathan Rabin, The Onion (A.V. Club)

"Dern is hilarious as the obsessive sister-in-law, Sarsgaard plays oddball dog-man to perfection, Pais is perfectly awkward as Peggy's nervous boss, Reilly rocks the subtle humor of Peggy's hunting-obsessed neighbor, and Shannon gives a breakout performance."

   - Toddy Burton, Austin Chronicle

"Until Year of the Dog, I've never seen a movie where someone obsessed over a puppy."

   - Lawrence Toppman, Charlotte Observer

"It may sound as if first-time director White is having his fun at the expense of introverted, asocial people who prefer the company of cats and dogs and gravitate toward animal-rights activism because the very idea of dealing with human problems requires an empathy they can't muster. But empathy is exactly what makes the film work."

   - Ken Fox, TV Guide
