Synopsis

Christian Bale stars in writer/director Werner Herzog's action drama, based on his acclaimed 1997 documentary, Little Dieter Needs to Fly. The film recounts the true story of Dieter Dengler (Bale), who grew up in bombed out, post-war Germany, dreaming of becoming a pilot. He eventually made his way to the United States, where he joined the military during the Vietnam War. Forty minutes into his first mission he was shot down and captured. Surviving untold tortures at the hands of the Vietcong, he eventually escaped—only to face the most unforgiving enemy of all: the jungle. Co-starring Steve Zahn and Jeremy Davies.

Reviews

"What a sweet collision is RESCUE DAWN: the American psycho meets the German kook."

   - Kyle Smith, New York Post

"An old-fashioned prisoner-of-war movie that becomes much more because of writer-director Werner Herzog's admiration for the remarkable true story of its protagonist, Dieter Dengler."

   - Walter Addiego, San Francisco Chronicle

"Out of a harrowing story set in a foreign thicket, Herzog has found American beauty."

   - Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

"That such a masterful depiction of American heroism and can-do spirit has been created by a German art film director known for considerably darker visions of obsession is an irony Herzog no doubt finds delicious."

   - Ann Hornaday, Washington Post

"Aside from a riveting adventure story that Herzog tells in all of its terrifying, stripped-down simplicity, Rescue Dawn is a fascinating study of human particularity."

   - Carina Chocano, Los Angeles Times
