Synopsis

Late-1970s British post-punk band Joy Division was one of the most influential groups of their time, inspiring U2, Kurt Cobain, The Cure, Interpol and countless "goth rock" bands. Sam Riley gives an unforgettable performance as the troubled, enigmatic leader of the Manchester band, Ian Curtis, whose talent for singing intense, darkly infectious pop songs (such as "Love Will Tear Us Apart") was subverted by mood swings, bouts of epilepsy and a crumbling marriage. Samantha Morton (In America, Minority Report) plays his wife, upon whose memoir the film is based. Feature debut of acclaimed photographer and music video director Anton Corbijn.

Reviews

"It's also that he's really, honest-to-God, got one of those movie faces that doesn't even come along once every generation. It's astonishing."

   - Glenn Kenny, Premiere

"Even though we're aware of the tragic trajectory of the singer's life, for a while it almost seems as if reality got it wrong and Curtis might just squeak past the reaper's scythe with no more than a shave and a haircut."

   - Marc Savlov, Austin Chronicle

"Even if you have no interest in Joy Division, this picture is worth seeing for the unsentimental empathy and passion of the moviemaking."

   - Michael Sragow, Baltimore Sun

"You don't have to know anything about Joy Division to grasp the mysterious sorrow at its heart."

   - A.O. Scott, The New York Times

"It's Corbijn, shooting with a poet's eye in a harshly stunning black-and-white, who cuts to the soul of Ian's life and music. You don't watch this movie, you live it."

   - Peter Travers, Rolling Stone
