Synopsis

BREAKFAST ON PLUTO, a vibrant and picturesque new film from Neil Jordan (THE CRYING GAME, INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE), is a story about Patrick "Kitten" Braden (played by Cillian Murphy, nominated for a Golden Globe for this role), an abandoned transvestite coming of age in a conservative Irish town, who sets off to find his birth mother in big city London. As the tale toggles between the fantastic (talking robins) and the grave (leering sexual predators), Murphy balances the character's naiveté with an awe-inspiring defiance, sashaying through this cruel world like Forrest Gump in a wig and four-inch platforms.

Jordan weaves a wonderfully surreal and magical tale to bring us this funny, moving and poignant rites of passage account of a young man enduring the trials and tribulations he faces with a smile and unwavering faith in the inherent goodness in us all.

Reviews

"Playful, poetic, shocking, saddening, and ultimately gratifyingly and honestly big-hearted."

   - Glenn Kenny, Premiere

"Murphy makes a thrillingly flesh-and-blood creature of Kitten, with her yearning, her droll, self-deprecating wit, her breathless romanticism and her puckish vibrancy. It's easily the most fun bit of screen acting this year, and as rich and nuanced as the lead in any drama."

   - Shawn Levy, Portland Oregonian

"The movie is like a Dickens novel in which the hero moves through the underskirts of society, encountering one colorful character after another."

   - Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

"For Jordan, this is a return to top form."

   - Bill Gallo, Dallas Observer
