Synopsis
Against the backdrop of Mahatma Gandhi's rise to power in 1938 Colonial India, child bride Chuyia is widowed and sent to an ashram, where bereaved Hindus must live in penitence. Once of her many new companions is Kalyani, who is forced to work as a prostitute for the ashram ruler. When Kalyani unexpectedly falls in love with an idealist law graduate, the lives of every woman in the ashram is forever changed. The final installment of the controversial "elements" trilogy written and directed by Deepa Mehta. This film was so controversial that shooting was disrupted by extremist forces, and George Lucas took out a full-page ad in "Variety" to support Deepa Mehta in her struggle to make this film when Indian authorities made clear their intentions to shut the production down.
