Synopsis

Set against the harsh and unforgiving landscape of the 1880s Australian outback, THE PROPOSITION is a visually stunning tale of loyalty, revenge and the quest for justice in a land without rule. In a land without rule, Charlie BUrns (Guy Pearce) is a renegade living in the lawless frontier who, along with his two brothers Arthur and Mikey, is wanted for murder and rape. When local law enforcer Captain Stanley captures Charlie and Mikey, he offers Charlie a bleak choice in an attempt to end the brutality that surrounds them: the only way to save his younger brother Mikey from the gallows is to track down and kill Arthur, his psychotic older brother, whom Captain Stanley believes to be the ringleader in the violence. Both men face an impossible moral dilemma that leads to murderous climax.

Reviews

"Directed by John Hillcoat, this Aussie feature perfectly re-creates the charbroiled landscapes and cruel psychodrama of the old Sergio Leone westerns, with John Hurt particularly fine as a raging old mountain goat."

   - J.R. Jones, Chicago Reader

"A movie you cannot turn away from; it is so pitiless and uncompromising, so filled with pathos and disregarded innocence, that it is a record of those things we pray to be delivered from."

   - Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

"In the end, this is a film about retribution and justice within unjust circumstances. Each character has a personal code of honor -- Arthur, Charlie and Capt. Stanley are all given their dignity -- and it's that code that sets the film apart."

   - Paula Nechak, Seattle Post-Intelligencer

"A pitiless yet elegiac Australian Western as caked with beauty as it is with blood."

   - Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

"Despite perpetual rumors of its demise as a genre, the Western is alive and well in the Australian outback."

   - Marjorie Baumgarten, Austin Chronicle
