A RESCUE from the heat at The Moxie

Hello once again!

If you're reading this email, then it means your computer hasn't melted from the sweltering heat! Hoorah! But let's not talk about the disgusting heatwave here in the Midwest. Let's talk about the finer points of summer, like how raspberries are on sale at the grocery store for only $1 a pint. One dollar! And...um...well, I really can't think of anything else, because doing outdoor activities just means getting out in the sweltering heat. Oh wait, I know a fun activity you can do to avoid scorching! You can come to The Moxie, where our AC is always running! We have plenty of films this month to choose from, whether you like a good laugh, a good cry, an escape from life, or to remind you about current issues going on in the rest of the world (where heat seems like the least of our problems). Here's what's going on:

YOU KILL ME and LA VIE EN ROSE are ending their terrific run here at The Moxie. YOU KILL ME (NOT to be confused with Lindsay Lohan's new film, "I Know Who Killed Me"), is a quirky romantic comedy starring Ben Kingsly and Tea Leoni. People are coming out with huge smiles because it's the perfect antidote to a crummy mood. If you're in the mood for the tragic, we highly recommend LA VIE EN ROSE, the biopic about French chanteuse Edith Piaf. Drugs, prostitutes, unrequited love...she's like a WW2-era Judy Garland! And Marion Cotillard, the actress playing Edith, has done such a spectacular job that she's already receiving Oscar buzz. Keep your fingers crossed for her!

Coming up this week we have two highly-anticipated films, RESCUE DAWN and EAGLE VS SHARK. RESCUE DAWN is Werner Herzog's (Grizzly Man) new film starring Christian Bale (sigh) and Steve Zahn, based on a true story about Vietnam POWs escaping and having to survive in the jungle. Herzog is known for pitting man against nature, and this one is no exception. We were lucky to snatch a print of this film, so make sure you don't miss it! If you need a primer for the film, we recommend checking out "Little Dieter Needs to Fly" which is Herzog's documentary on which RESCUE DAWN is based. Then, to lighten things up a bit, we're showing for one week only EAGLE VS SHARK, the hilarious new comedy from New Zealand about two total dorks who fall in love. "Flight of the Concords" Jemaine Clement stars, and we've also brought in a nice, crisp refreshing Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand to sell at the Cinebar. On special for $4.50 a glass. EAGLE is also our LAST film in our Passport Series. Make sure to sign your passport and turn it in, so we can hand out some fun prizes!

Then lastly, we're showing a powerful documentary called TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE, directed by Alex Gibney (ENRON: THE SMARTEST GUYS IN THE ROOM). This is part of a special series we're doing this August, where festival films are vying to be eligible for Oscar nominations. We promise, you will be so sorry if you miss them. The last two have been phenomenal, and the next two are even better. TAXI is a pretty intense film, looking at the torture practices of the United States in Afghanistan, Iraq and Guantanamo Bay, focusing on an innocent taxi driver in Afghanistan who was tortured and killed in 2002. Next week, WAR / DANCE is a little bit lighter, about Ugandan kids competing in national dance and music competitions. Both have been highly praised and definitely worth checking out.

That's about it for us this week. We hope you've had a good weekend, and we'll see you soon!

Thanks as always,

Dan and Nicole C.

MOVIE INFORMATION

LA VIE EN ROSE - From the streets of Paris to the limelight of New York's glamorous concert halls, Edith Piaf's (Marion Cotillard) life was a constant battle for love and survival. Her passionate romances and friendships with such luminaries as Yves Montand, Jean Cocteau, Charles Aznavour and Marlene Deitrich made her as famous as she was for her beautiful renditions of songs like "La Vie en Rose." But in trying to alter her tragic destiny, the "Little Sparrow"—as she was nicknamed—flew so high that she could not fail to burn her wings.

YOU KILL ME - Frank (Ben Kingsley) loves his job. He just happens to be a hit-man from Buffalo whose drinking is getting in the way of his killing. Sent to the west coast to dry out, he lands a job at a mortuary and meets Laurel (Téa Leoni), who is tart-tongued and dangerously devoid of boundaries. When violence erupts back home, Frank is forced to return. But Laurel isn't far behind and just may be the secret weapon Frank needs to settle old scores. Co-starring Luke Wilson, Dennis Farina, Philip Baker Hall, Bill Pullman and Marcus Thomas. A street-smart mob comedy directed by John Dahl (ROUNDERS, THE LAST SEDUCTION).

RESCUE DAWN - Christian Bale stars in writer/director Werner Herzog's action drama, based on his acclaimed 1997 documentary, Little Dieter Needs to Fly. The film recounts the true story of Dieter Dengler (Bale), who grew up in bombed out, post-war Germany, dreaming of becoming a pilot. He eventually made his way to the United States, where he joined the military during the Vietnam War. Forty minutes into his first mission he was shot down and captured. Surviving untold tortures at the hands of the Vietcong, he eventually escaped—only to face the most unforgiving enemy of all: the jungle. Co-starring Steve Zahn and Jeremy Davies.

EAGLE VS SHARK - PASSPORT FILM 10 of 10 - From New Zealand comes a wickedly offbeat love story—a funny, fractured romance between two total misfits, woven into an all-consuming quest for revenge, and shot through with the strange, sweet hilarity of the human condition. It all begins with Lily (Loren Horsley), a lonely oddball and fast-food waitress who happens to be a hopeless romantic. Then there's Jarrod (Jemaine Clement), the man of Lily's dreams, another lonely oddball and video game clerk, who has spent the last decade plotting ultimate vengeance on a bully from his high school past. When these two connect at a "dress as your favorite animal" party, Lily decides to risk everything for love.

TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE -

The Moxie has been selected as one of 14 theaters across the US to show four incredible documentaries that are vying for Oscar eligibility in 2008. Don't miss your chance to see these extraordinary, award-winning films. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Alex Gibney's documentary about the U.S. torture practices in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay, which recently won Best Documentary Feature prize at the Tribeca Film Festival, examines the death of an Afghan taxi driver at Bagram Air Base from injuries inflicted by U.S. soldiers. In an unflinching look at the Bush administration's policy on torture, from a village in Afghanistan to Guantanamo and straight to the White House.
