This Week at The Moxie: More than We can Fit in a Subject Line!

Dear Film Lovers,

What a great time of year it is to be a film enthusiast! The awards season is starting, and while we sometimes moan about the validity of the Oscar, it's still so much fun to watch everything unfold. This year you'll probably recognize quite a few faces from the Moxie screen*. For example, Marissa Tomei is currently nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Independent Spirit Awards for BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD, as well as receiving the Best Nude Scene from Playboy Magazine this year. DEVIL is also up for Best First Screenplay at the Spirit Awards. This film ends on Tuesday, so you might want to come in and see what the fuss is about. And let me just say - it will make you feel so much better about your dysfunctional family gatherings!

Also coming up this week is LUST CAUTION, Ang Lee's new erotic espionage thriller set in 1940s Shanghai, which received Best Female AND Male Lead nominations, plus Best Cinematography from the Independent Spirit Awards, as well as Best Foreign Film nomination for the Golden Globes. This film is NC-17, folks.

And continuing this week is WRISTCUTTERS, the quirky romantic comedy about a young man who ends up in a purgatory world after committing suicide, and is on a journey to find his girlfriend (who is also in this world). The subject matter may be dark, but the film is touching and, dare we say, fun? Patrick Fugit (the aspiring journalist from ALMOST FAMOUS) stars, along with Tom Waits and Will Arnett.

Two very special events for the holidays are also happening this week:

TO AND FROM, our annual Nate Black / Brandon Goodwin local film, is a silly and cute comedy by two very talented filmmakers. Sunday and Monday shows are SOLD OUT! We still have about 30 tickets left for Tuesday night at 9:15pm, so we highly recommend that you get your tickets in advance. That means online, or come in Sunday or Monday to pick them up. The film is a hoot, and stars three of Springfield's biggest celebs: Jeff Houghton and Jeff Jenkins from The Skinny Improv, and Robert E Smith.

And on Thursday Dec. 20 and Friday Dec. 21, we, along with The Gillioz Theatre, are presenting IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, the holiday classic starring James Stewart and Donna Reed. The film will be at The Gillioz, along with Santa in the lobby, festive music, and free bells for everyone. Tickets are $5 and can be bought at the door. Cash only, please. This is sure to be another annual holiday tradition you can look forward to from The Moxie!

Lastly, if you're stressing out about holiday gift giving, and the 15-people deep lines at Target give you anxiety attacks, then look no further than your local independent cinema. We have gift certificates in any amount you'd like, which are good for tickets and/or concessions, $50 bulk passes that get you 10 tickets for $50, brand NEW Moxie t-shirts for $15 (100% cotton made by American Apparel), and one-inch Moxie buttons for $1. You can even order the gift certificates online, and we'll mail them directly to you or your recipient!

BEFORE THE DEVIL KNOWS YOU'RE DEAD - Master filmmaker Sidney Lumet (Network, Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico) directs an absorbing suspense thriller about a family facing the worst enemy of all—itself. Philip Seymour Hoffman plays Andy, an overextended broker who lures his younger brother Hank (Ethan Hawke) into a larcenous scheme: the pair will rob a suburban mom-and-pop jewelry store that appears to be the quintessential easy target. The problem is, the store owners are Andy and Hank's actual mom and pop and, when the seemingly perfect crime goes awry, the damage lands right at their doorstep. Co-starring Marisa Tomei, Albert Finney and Rosemary Harris.

WRISTCUTTERS: A LOVE STORY - From the moment Zia (in his late 20s) cuts his wrists and enters a bizarre afterlife reserved for suicides, this film becomes a strangely uplifting, comic tale about a journey through the hereafter. It is a world where everyone still bears the scars earned from the manner in which they "offed," and the everyday reality is a twisted mirror image of our own mortal world.

TO AND FROM - Before moving to Antarctica to study Astrophysics at the South Pole, Harry (Mystery Jeff Houghton) returns home for the holidays to stay with his eccentric grandfather (Robert E. Smith) who believes he is Santa Claus. Harry develops a crush on his family physician (Sarah Jenkins) and finds himself in a feud with his grandfather's girlfriend's grandson (Jeff Jenkins). This week proves to be filled with unrequited love, childish rivalries, and misguided holiday adventure. Written and directed by local filmmakers Nate Black and Brandon Goodwin.
