Bob Dylan and The Savages at The Moxie
Dear Reader,
Wowzas! We're showing a film here at The Moxie that has had everyone humming with delight. It's a biopic called I'M NOT THERE about this famous singer from the 60s...Bob Dylan? Have you heard of him? I'm not too familiar. All I know is that he's Jakob Dylan's dad, you know, from The Wallflowers.
Anyways, this film interprets different phases of his life (Bob's, not Jakob's) and uses SIX different actors to portray this legendary singer (yes, I really do know who Bob Dylan is - my entire 13th year was spent listening to Blood on the Tracks, and I felt so ahead of my peers). Directed by Todd Haynes (FAR FROM HEAVEN), and starring an ensemble cast including Cate Blanchett, Richard Gere, Christian Bale and Heath Ledger, this is an inventive depiction of the musician/songwriter/radical/whathaveyou, and one that even received a stamp of approval from Dylan himself. Don't miss what reviewers are calling The Film of the Year!
We also are continuing the darker than dark comedy MARGOT AT THE WEDDING, directed by Noah Baumbach and starring Nicole Kidman, which plays until Tuesday. On Wednesday we start the highly anticipated, and other darker-than-dark tragicomedy, THE SAVAGES, starring Laura Linney and Phillip Seymore Hoffman. It's a film about two siblings who have to start taking care of their father when he starts showing signs of dementia. Both Linney and Hoffman have received accolades aplenty, so keep your eyes out for them during awards season.
Lastly - if you have picked up one of our calendars and seen the TBA slot on January 30th - wait no longer. We are excited to present to you THE ORPHANAGE, Spain's newest horror film. Check out our website to watch the preview - it says everything you need to know, which is "ahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!" (http://www.moxiecinema.com/films/285)
Thanks as always,
Nicole and Dan C

MOVIE INFORMATION
MARGOT AT THE WEDDING - Writer/director Noah Baumbach's follow-up to The Squid and the Whale is a daringly funny and bracingly honest exploration of the tender, absurd and sometimes excruciating relationship between siblings. Margot (Nicole Kidman), a savagely bright, razor-tongued short-story writer who creates chaos wherever she goes, sets off on a surprise journey to the wedding of her estranged and free-spirited sister Pauline (Jennifer Jason Leigh). With her all-too-rapidly maturing son Claude (Zane Pais) in tow, Margot arrives with the gale force of a hurricane. From the minute she meets Pauline's fiancé—the unemployed artist Malcolm (Jack Black)—Margot starts to plant seeds of doubt about the union. As the wedding approaches, the two sisters find themselves at the precipice of an unexpected transformation.

I'M NOT THERE - This highly anticipated biographical film about legendary singer and songwriter Bob Dylan follows six distinct characters, depicting different stages of Dylan's life, embodying a different aspect of his life story and music. Cate Blanchett, Richard Gere, Heath Ledger, Christian Bale, Ben Whishaw and Marcus Carl Franklin all take turns playing Dylan, and Julianne Moore and Charlotte Gainsbourg appear as two of the women in his life. Lyrical, poetic and highly stylized, it's the first biographical feature project to secure the approval of the music legend. Directed and co-written by Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven, Velvet Goldmine).

THE SAVAGES - In her irreverent, hilarious and heartbreaking story revolving around a modern American family, writer/director Tamara Jenkins (Slums of Beverly Hills) portrays an all-too-common dilemma: After drifting apart emotionally and geographically over the years, two siblings—Wendy (Laura Linney, You Can Count on Me) and Jon (Philip Seymour Hoffman, Capote)—must band together to care for an elderly parent (Philip Bosco) who is beginning to show signs of senility.
