Treat Your Sweety to Films at The Moxie

Greetings Film Fans!

It seems like I say this every time I write the newsletter, but I'll go ahead and say it again: "What a great week to be a film fan!" We have so much going on here that it might be hard to pick and choose. So you should probably just bring a pillow and a blanket and hang out with us all week!

Hopefully you've already caught THE ORPHANAGE, the creepiest ghost story since THE SIXTH SENSE. Produced by Pan's Labyrinth's Guillermo del Toro, this spine-chilling tale will have you jumping in your seat, and making you never want to go down in a basement again. Yet at the same time, it will warm your heart and you might even shed a tear or two. At least I did! Tuesday is the last day, so please do yourself a favor and check out this film. Sure it's scary, but it's worth it!

We also are continuing our run of THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY, the true story of Jean-Do Bauby, a charismatic man who suffers a stroke that leaves him completely paralyzed, his only means of communication is by blinking his eye. The film is gorgeous and up for FOUR Oscar nominations: Editing, Cinematography, Director, and Adaptation. We hope it wins them all! If you haven't read the memoir, we highly recommend you do so. Our friends at Well Fed Head (across the street from The Moxie) have been nice enough to bring in some copies of the book with a 10%-off discount!

And speaking of books, PERSEPOLIS also starts on Wednesday. It's based on the graphic novel (kind of like a comic book) by Marjane Satrapi, and tells the tale of a young girl during the Islamic Revolution who ends up moving to Europe after family members start disappearing. It brings the stark b&w comic book feel directly to screen, and received an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature this year. The film is funny, tragic, uplifting and inspiring. Well Fed Head has chosen the novel as their February Book Club selection, so read the book, watch the film, and discuss! It's always a fun time!

That lovey-dovey holiday is also coming up. If you've got someone special you'd like to impress, we have a couple options for you. One: You can take your beau/belle to The Gillioz on Thursday or Friday at 7pm for a special screening of the classic love story CASABLANCA. Tickets are $5 and include lots of fun treats. The tickets can be purchased at The Gillioz box office! Second: We accidentally received a case of Sofia Coppolla Blanc des Blancs Sparkling wine instead of a case of Sofia Coppolla Rose. And who am I to turn away a case of champagne (ok...so I already drank half of it)? So bring your (insert term of endearment here) and sip on some sparkling wine ($4 a flute) while watching PERSEPOLIS or THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY (both nice date movies). If you hate Valentine's, you can still come see a movie and sip something sweet. We don't mind!

Don't forget that February is Black History Month, and to help celebrate, we're co-hosting a film discussion at Big Momma's Coffee and Espresso Bar at 217 E Commercial Street. Lyle, the owner, has picked out a great short film called THE TEST, a powerful true story about Georgia's death row, and the issue of penal reform. The event is Free. Bring your thinking cap and empty stomach - Big Momma's has some pretty tasty drinks and sandwiches over there (we recommend The Old 66).

Last but not least, we are proud to be a venue for the third year in a row for the Missouri Film Alliance's Show-Me International Film Fest. All weekend long you can check out independent films, workshops and seminars. It's a downtown event, with The Gillioz screening films as well, and The Coffee Ethic as the ticket hub. For a lineup of films, visit their website at www.MissouriFilm.org. We're pretty pumped about EL CANTANTE with visiting filmmaker Leon Ichaso at The Gillioz, and HENRY MAY LONG, a feature-length period piece showing at The Moxie.

Phew. I'm done. Until next time...

Thanks as always,
Nicole and Dan C

MOVIE INFORMATION
THE ORPHANAGE - A woman discovers dark secrets hidden within her cherished childhood home in this supernatural drama, the feature film debut of young Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona. A superbly atmospheric and emotionally powerful tale of love, loss and guilt, The Orphanage is the first film ever to be presented by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth), who also produced. Bayona and gifted first-time screenwriter Sergio Sánchez deliver an elegant, shivery ghost story in the tradition of such classics as The Innocents, The Haunting and The Others as they explore the shadowy places where human longing meets the unknown and unknowable. Award-winning actress Belén Rueda (The Sea Inside) stars.

PERSEPOLIS -

Persepolis is the poignant story of a young girl in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. It is through the eyes of the precocious and outspoken 9-year-old Marjane that we see a people's hopes dashed as fundamentalists take power--forcing the veil on women and imprisoning thousands. Clever and fearless, Marjane outsmarts the "social guardians" and discovers punk, ABBA, and Iron Maiden. Yet when her uncle is senselessly executed and as bombs fall around Tehran in the Iran/Iraq war, the daily fear that permeates life in Iran is palpable.

Nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 2008 Academy Awards! This is also Well Fed Head's February book club choice, with a film/book discussion to be held on Tues., Feb 26 @ 7:30 pm at Well Fed Head.
