the Moxie is BIGGER STRONGER AND FASTER
Hey there loyal film buffs!
Dan and Nicole decided to have an underling write the newsletter this week. Well, not really decided so much as begged. My name's Max Rosen, and I am an employee at the Moxie Cinema. You may have seen me working before, I'm the awesome one.
Anyway, this week at the Moxie we've got some good stuff planned for your viewing pleasure (don't let the vagueness of that statement fool you, this is seriously good stuff, people). (And anyway, it won't be vague for too long, because I'm about to tell you about this said "good stuff".) (Wow Max, you're really blowing this with all the parenthetical statements.) I'll tell ya who's not blowing it though, the Moxie that's who!
Starting this Wednesday, July 16th, BIGGER STRONGER FASTER will be muscling its way onto the Moxie's screen. From the producers who brought you BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE and FAHRENHEIT 9/11, the film tackles the controversial issue of steroid use in sports. Blending comedy and pathos, writer-director Christopher Bell's film takes you on journey into the world of steroid use. He covers all sides of the issue, interviewing everyone from U.S. Congressmen to professional athletes to medical experts to his own steroid-abusing brothers.
The film was an official selection to the Sundance, Tribeca, and True/False film festivals. The Moxie's own... uh, owners, Dan and Nicole Chilton, caught a viewing of the film at the True/False documentary film festival. Both agree that the movie is "incredibly entertaining, and surprisingly not gross" (which Nicole feared it would be, before watching). Dan adds that, "it's better than you might expect; and if you're fan of 80's-era professional wrestling, you'll definitely get an extra kick out of it." While Nicole approves "it's not your typical Ben Affleck after-school special about steroids...*chuckles nostalgically*...it's much better!" So there ya go, you heard it (er, read it) from the horses' mouths. Be sure you don't miss this funny and effecting documentary as it plays from this Wednesday, July 16th, until next Tuesday, July 22nd, at the Moxie.
Also this week, we're continuing our run of the hilarious, albeit crude FOOT FIST WAY. This Will Ferrell-endorsed comedy tells "the story of a man who teaches people how to kick other people in the face," as the poster's tagline so eloquently puts it. With a style similar to TV's The Office, THE FOOT FIST WAY features Danny McBride (soon to be seen in this summer's TROPIC THUNDER and PINEAPPLE EXPRESS) playing the role of self-deluded Tae Kwon Do instructor Fred Simmons, whose talk usually overshadows his walk. People have been leaving this one with a smile on their face and a head full of quotes to share with their friends.
The film was made on a small budget and went unreleased until it landed in the hands of Will Ferrell and his writing/directing partner Adam McKay (the two are responsible for comedy hits like ANCHORMAN and TALLADEGA NIGHTS). After watching it (a lot apparently, as the trailer informs us), the two Hollywood hitmakers promoted the film and got it distributed. Now, you can see it at the Moxie while it plays its second week before finishing up its run on July 22nd.
So be sure to visit Springfield's only independent cinema this week to catch all this good stuff! I'm lowly employee Max Rosen, and thanks for reading this week's Moxie newsletter (the first to feature a guest writer [and consequently, possibly the last] {okay, seriously, enough with the parenthetical statements!}]).
Woo!

THEN SHE FOUND ME - Helen Hunt makes her feature directing debut with the touching story of schoolteacher April Epner (Hunt) and her very unlikely path towards personal fulfillment. Following the separation from her husband (Matthew Broderick) and the death of her adopted mother, April is contacted by her apparent birth mother (Bette Midler), who turns out to be a local talk show host Bernice Graves. As Bernice tries to become the mother to April that she was never able to be, April seems to find solace in the arms of the parent of one of her students (Colin Firth), only to find that the mystery to life's questions cannot be solved by a simple revelation. Adapted from Elinor Lipman's novel of the same name.

THE FOOT FIST WAY - A sensation at the Sundance Film Festival, audiences fell in love with the seriously self-deluded Tae Kwon Do instructor Fred Simmons (Danny McBride), who talks a big, macho game, but falls to pieces when his wife betrays him. At his studio, “the way of the foot and the fist” turns boys into black belts and suburbanites into great warriors. That is, until Simmons’ seemingly perfect life starts collapsing when he discovers his wife having an affair on him. Twice. A chance to resurrect his life by battling his hero—the 8-time undefeated champ and star of the Seven Rings of Pain trilogy, Chuck “The Truck” Wallace (Ben Best)—gives Simmons’ life purpose as he winds up on a wild, comic journey that will take him from egomaniacal bluster all the way to becoming the stand-up man of his delusional dreams.

BIGGER STRONGER FASTER - In America, we define ourselves in the superlative: we are the biggest, strongest, fastest country in the world. We reward speed, size and above all else: winning at sport, at business and at war. Metaphorically we are a nation on steroids. Is it any wonder that so many of our heroes are on performance enhancing drugs? Blending comedy and pathos, Bigger, Stronger, Faster* is a collision of pop culture and first-person narrative, with a diverse cast including US Congressmen, professional athletes, medical experts and everyday gym rats. At its heart, this is the story of director Christopher Bell and his two brothers, who grew up idolizing muscular giants like Hulk Hogan, Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, and who went on to become members of the steroid-subculture in an effort to realize their American dream. When you discover that your heroes have all broken the rules, do you follow the rules, or do you follow your heroes?
