From the Wild West to the South Pole, only at The Moxie
Why hello there!
The big question as of late is, "What's going to be your first film at the New Moxie?" To which we reply, "Oh, I don't know. We have a couple good ones up our sleeve, but what do YOU want to see? Something old? New? Borrowed...blue...?" So, next time you stop in, give us some suggestions!
In the meantime, here's what you can expect to watch at the current Moxie:
ROMAN DE GARE and THE PROMOTION both end on Tuesday. We've heard from multiple people that they thought the preview to ROMAN DE GARE was less than stellar. Please don't let that dissuade you from watching the film. It is a fantastic French thriller that keeps you guessing at every turn. You won't be disappointed! If you're in the mood for that uncomfortable comedy that John C. Reilley does so well, then come on down and check out THE PROMOTION!
On Wednesday we are SO excited to start ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD. We're thinking about changing our theater's name to WERNER HERZOG MAKES A LOT OF FILMS. ENCOUNTERS is his latest documentary following man versus nature, and this time he takes us on the most spectacular visually stunning voyage to the South Pole and those who inhabit its extreme climate. We had a misprint in our weekend ad in the paper, so make sure you check below and online before coming to the show! It premieres Wednesday at 7:00 pm, NOT at 9:30pm! We will not be having a late show that evening. And by the way, this film is rated G - a first for The Moxie!
Then on Friday we start THE FLIGHT OF THE RED BALLOON, a modern re-telling of the 1950's classic short film. It stars the lovely Juliette Binoche, and is directed by Hsiao-hsien Hou, in his first European film. Make sure you check out the trailer (linked below), and if you love Paris as much as I do, this film is a must - it's like a love letter to the City of Lights.
Lastly, you MUST come to The Gillioz during the weekend and check out a screening of John Wayne's THE SEARCHERS. What better time to watch a Western than during the summer? Don't be surprised if you run into some gun slingers and witness a shoot-out, though. Things get pretty rough down at the ol historic theatre!
That about wraps it up for us this week. As a head's up, we'll be having a Q&A with executive producer Randy Wooten for his film ROMAN POLANSKI: WANTED AND DESIRED, on Wed. Aug. 20, and if you're looking for a family-friendly film, look no further than ADVENTURES OF FOODBOY, starring tween heart throb and Springfieldian Lucas Gabreel. Check our website for ticket information, but make sure to buy them ahead of time. They go quickly!

ROMAN DE GARE - Best-selling author Judith Ralitzer is researching unlikely places to find characters for her next bestseller. As luck would have it, a serial killer with a penchant for magic tricks has just escaped from a high-security prison...providing the perfect source material for an intricately plotted, mood mystery.
This highly anticipated new feature from writer/director Claude Lelouch (Oscar winner for A Man and a Woman) stars Dominique Pinon and Fanny Ardant as an unlikely couple caught up in a game with high stakes—and deadly consequences. The thriller takes its title from the name given to pulp fictions sold in French train stations.

ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD - Werner Herzog confirms his standing as poet laureate of men in extreme situations with Encounters at the End of the World. In this visually stunning exploration, Herzog travels to the Antarctic community of McMurdo Station, headquarters of the National Science Foundation and home to eleven hundred people during the austral summer (Oct-Feb). Over the course of his journey, Herzog examines human nature and Mother nature, juxtaposing breathtaking locations with the profound, surreal, and sometimes absurd experiences of the marine biologists, physicists, plumbers, and truck drivers who choose to form a society as far away from society as one can get.

THE FLIGHT OF THE RED BALLOON - A highlight at the 2007 Cannes, Toronto, and New York film festivals, Flight of the Red Balloon is the latest masterpiece from Hou Hsiao Hsien. Inspired by Albert Lamorisse's 1956 Academy Award-winning classic, Flight of the Red Balloon, Hou expands on that film's key elements--a young boy, a red balloon, and Paris--to weave an achingly beautiful tale about the mysteries of familial bonds and the lingering effects the past has on us all. Simon, a precocious young boy, must deal with the increasing fragility of his mother, the loving yet preoccupied Suzanne. Completely immersed in her own tribulations, Suzanne hires Song, a Taiwanese film student, to help care for Simon. Together with Song, a unique extended family is formed, utterly interdependent yet lost in separate thoughts and dreams mirrored by a delicate, shiny red balloon.
